Even before the independence, the state of Maharashtra has always been the leader in Education, Art and Science. For the development of the common man, new education system was adopted. Along with Religious andSocial, Maharashtra also actively participated in the agitation of Fine Art. After the independence the education in Maharashtra got new direction.
Several Educational Institutions were established. Besides technical and professional Institutions, Fine Art Institutions were also established.
In 1967, Fine Art Department was started in Government Polytechnic, Nagpur. Out of four Govt. Institutes, Govt. Art & Design College in Nagpur is the only Art Institution of eastern Maharashtra.
Currently the Art Workshop not only trains the students with fine art basics with the crafts training but also focuses on art history and aesthetical knowledge imparted to the students.
Established in the year of independence, the Art Department was transformed into Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya. Under the guidance of Late Shri. Joshirao the Art Department was created and the syllabus for three years diploma course in Fine Art was created with multi objectives. Nagpur University used to issue the diploma certificates.
In 1960 after the state of Maharashtra was formed, five years later Directorate of Art was created in Mumbai. And the control of all the Art Institutions in Maharashtra, went to the Directorate of Art. It was an important event as far as the development of Art was concerned. In 1967 Art Department started its independent operations in the name of Govt. Kala Niketan. The very next year in 1968, it started functioning in the name of Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya.
This three years diploma course was then converted into a five years degree course. 1973 onwards Nagpur University started awarding Bachelor of Fine Art (B.F.A.) degree. This Institute happens to be the first Institution in Maharashtra to offer the degree course in Fine Arts. Approximately 350 students are currently studying at the Institute.
Computers invaded anything and every thing and Art is not the exception. As per the need of the hour, the Institute upgraded itself and caught up with the technology, to make itself at par with the international standards.
